Tartan Canada Corporation achieves safety excellence

January 27, 2010 — Tartan Canada Corporation announced today that its independent operating subsidiary, Tartan Construction Ltd., recorded an injury-free workplace for the year ending 2009.

"A Total Recordable Injury Frequency of zero, maintained over a one-year period is an exceptional accomplishment, and is quite rare in our industry," says Tartan's president, Darrel Howell. "I'm proud of the people and the programs we have in place that have made this possible."

Tartan's safety program is built on a strong foundation, which is supported by the following three key components:
  • Proactive measures

  • Management visibility

  • Individual responsibility
Proactive measures include a comprehensive training program that is designed to facilitate good communication between everyone involved, while contributing directly to the overall objective of continuous program improvement. Another important element is Tartan's Behavior Based Observation Program (VOICE Cards), which is used to identify and mitigate at-risk behavior.

Management visibility helps to ensure that safety is stressed throughout the company, from the leadership team and safety management group, to the site superintendents and foreman, and the on-site workers.

Individual responsibility means that safety is not only an important component of each employee's job description, it also guides and defines the behavior of everyone who is performing work on-site.

"Our company safety policies and procedures are based on the underlying principle that all injuries are preventable," Howell says. "The fact that Tartan Construction maintained an injury-free workplace last year validates the strength of our safety program. It's important to remember, however, that safety excellence is not a one-time-only achievement; instead, it must be an ongoing process. We will continue to press forward with our best efforts to maintain the safest workplace possible for our employees, our subcontractors and our clients."

Lac La Biche student receives Tartan Canada Corporation scholarship.

November 9, 2009 — Tartan Canada Corporation (Tartan) is pleased to announce the first scholarship to be presented through its Trade School Scholarship Program. The $1000 scholarship has been awarded to Jordan Moghrabi, who resides in Lac La Biche, Alberta.

The Tartan program provides financial assistance with technical and vocational training for high school students who are interested in entering the trades. Mr. Moghrabi will be using the proceeds of his scholarship to help cover the cost of his first semester of the Pipe Trades Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), beginning in October of this year. After completing the educational and work experience requirements for his Journeyman ticket, he is planning on opening a plumbing contracting business in the Lac La Biche area.

According to Tartan’s President, Darrel Howell, it is important to give something back to the communities that support the maintenance services industry. “We are extremely pleased that we have been able to present this scholarship to such a worthy individual as Jordan. The availability of qualified people in the trades is very important for everyone in our industry. By helping cover the cost of technical education, we hope that more people will be encouraged to pursue a career in the trades, providing them with the opportunity to achieve their long-term personal and financial goals. We wish Jordan the best of luck in furthering his education.”

Tartan has a long history of community involvement that dates back to 1953, when Tartan Construction Ltd. first began operations in the Redwater, Alberta area. “We believe that community support is absolutely essential for maintaining our company’s growth and continued success,” Howell says. “We have participated in a variety of projects in Redwater, and have since expanded to Conklin and other areas where we have company operations. In addition to donations and volunteer support, we have also been involved in a number of other initiatives, including community clean-up programs, Canada Day celebrations, and CAPP Energy in Action.”

The Tartan scholarship program was developed in response to the company’s community involvement in schools in Conklin, Lac La Biche and other local regions. To qualify, applicants must reside within the geographic area encompassing Lac La Biche, Conklin, Chard, and Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation (Janvier).

Tartan will be continuing to award scholarships during the 2009/10 school year for high school students in the Conklin and area region who are interested in entering the trades. June 15, 2009 — Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is the voice of Canada's upstream oil and natural gas industry, representing over 130 member companies. The CAPP has introduced Energy in Action which provides companies with an opportunity to express their commitment to the environment and communities that their companies operate in.

Tartan Canada Corporation participated in Energy in Action (EIA) in Conklin Alberta on May 28th 2009. The purpose of the Energy in Action Program is to bring industry and communities together to care for our natural environment.

Together with representatives from Devon, Chevron, Canadian Natural Resources, EnCana, Enerplus, Nexen, Opti, Paramount and Total, Tartan helped approximately 30 school children plant 3 truck loads of trees, shrubs and flowers in their school yard. Children also painted wooden cutouts of flowers and butterflies to help decorate their schoolyard.

Tartan also donated equipment and personnel to transport the four truckloads consisting of the cutouts and plants from Calgary and Fort McMurray.

Volunteers and children participated in a lunch and learn where we learned the importance of Personal Protective Equipment and children raced to see who could suit up the fastest.

Employees from participating companies got a much deserved break from their regular work schedules and had a chance to interact with people from the community.

Thank you to Dunvegan Gardens Ltd. in Fort McMurray for the beautiful plants and all of their help in making this event a success.
